Thiruvananthauram: The capital of the state.
It is one of the cleaner and well-planned cities of the state. One of the most enchanting picnic spots. This city is gifted with internationally renowned beaches, historic monuments, backwater stretches and a rich cultural heritage. The area of historical interest in the city is the Fort, at the southern end of M.G.Road, which encloses the famous Shri Padmanabhaswamy Vishnu Temple. It was constructed by a Maharaja of Travancore, in 1733. The temple is open only to Hindus.The Napier Museum is housed in a striking building, and has a good collection of bronzes, ivory carvings, ancient musical instruments and life-size figures of Kathakali dancers. The art collection at the Sri Chitra Art Gallery, contains paintings of the Mughal, Tanjore and Rajput schools and a special section, devoted exclusively to the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma. There are, also, works of art from China, Bali, Tibet and Japan. The Zoological Gardens are, said to be, among the most well-planned zoos in Asia. The Botanical Garden within the zoo, houses specimens of almost every tropical tree existing. The Observatory, located on the highest point of the city, is one of the impressive architectural landmarks of Thiruvananthapuram.

The chief landmark in Fort Cochin is undoubtedly the St.Francis Church built in the 16th century. It is the oldest existing European Church in India. The remains of the traveller Vasco da Gama were buried there before being shifted to Portugal. Mattanchery has a Dutch palace built by the Portuguese and presented to the Cochin ruler Vira Kerala Varma in 1555. The Parishath Thampuram Museum in Ernakulam has a large collection of 19th-century oil paintings, old coins, sculptures, Mughal paintings, and temple models. The Chinese fishing nets are the most efficient means of backwater fishing, quite common in Fort Cochin.

It is 16 kms away from Trivandrum, the CapitalKovalam beach is known as the "Paradise of the South". Kovalam" means a grove of coconut trees and true to its name the village offers an endless sight of coconut trees. Kovalam was among the most prominent tourist spots in India. There are three beaches at Kovalam, separated by outcrops jutting out to the sea. The larger one is called Light House Beach for its 30 odd metre high light house.
